This course provides an introduction to the practical skills and theoretical knowledge required to work in the music industry. The course suits those who have some experience of playing an instrument and want to develop their skills in a new direction and ultimately progress into a career in the music industry.
You will need four GCSEs at grade A*-C. Alternatively you may have a BTEC Level 2 Diploma at Merit or Distinction level.
You must also be able to play an instrument or sing to grade 4 standard, and you will need to attend an interview / audition where your practical skills and music theory knowledge will be assessed.
This course is centred around band rehearsal, performance and instrumental skills development, but also contains some academic study. You will receive group tuition on your main instrument but are expected to practice in your own time. You will also study units in history of popular music, music business, music technology, musicianship, composition and songwriting.

The Sound and Music Industry
Aural Perception Skills
Music and Society
Music Performance Session Styles
Music Theory and Harmony
Sequencing Systems and Techniques
The Functional Music Keyboard
Functional Skills also form an integral part of the course. Its not all practical: the academic side is very important, too.
How will I be assessed?
Modules are assessed using a range of methods including practical assignments, presentations, written essays, projects and phase tests, completed both in College and at home. Although there is a slant towards practical work, there is also a significant academic element to this course, you need to be prepared for this.Please note, this is a two year course and you will need to achieve satisfactory grades and attendance in the first year to progress to year 2.
Are there any additional costs or specialist equipment required?
You will need to have your own pair of headphones and a USB memory stick. You will also need to have your own instrument where applicable.
This course is free for young people aged 16-18. All you will have to pay is a small enrichment fee.
If you are 19+ there may be a small cost to the course but we can help you understand this more at interview and you may be eligible for financial help dependant on your circumstances.
If you are 24+ you will need to apply for an advanced learner loan and we can advise you more on this when you come in and see us.

BTEC Extended Diploma is equivalent to 3 A-Levels. Upon successful completion you can progress into Higher Education courses. Typical employment includes: Performer, Composer, Community Musician, Private Tuition.
